Nokian Romania factory earns LEED Gold certification
Nokian Tyres’ production building at the factory in Romania has earned LEED v4 Gold certification for sustainable building from the U.S. Green Building Council. It is the first LEED Gold certified tyre factory in the world.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is one of the most widely recognised sustainable building rating systems in the world.
Buildings with LEED certification are judged to consume less energy and water, have lower CO2 emissions, divert more waste from landfills, and are healthier environments for people.

Nokian Tyres’ facility in Romania earned LEED v4 Gold certification for its wide range of sustainable elements, including, for example, energy efficiency, onsite solar panels, and efficient water management system.
“Sustainability is not only about the products we create, it is also about the spaces where we create them. Earning the LEED certification reflects our commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of our operations while providing healthier, safer, and more energy‑efficient workplaces for our employees,” said Teppo Huovila, vice president of quality and sustainability at Nokian Tyres.
Nokian Tyres’ factory in Romania started tyre deliveries in March 2025, and it is the first full-scale zero-CO2-emissions (Scope 1 & 2) tyre factory in the world.
In 2020, Nokian Tyres’ factory in the US was the first tyre factory in the world to earn LEED v4 Silver certification, and its LEED v4 Gold-certified administration building is fully powered by energy generated from onsite solar panels.
Nokian Tyres was also selected as one of the World’s Most Sustainable Companies by TIME Magazine in 2025.
Nokian Tyres is represented in Ireland by Mileage Tyres, who will be exhibiting at the 2026 Auto Trade EXPO, which takes place alongside the CV Workshop EXPO from 10th -11th October at the RDS Simmonscourt in Dublin.
