Great finish at the British Drift Championship for Infinity
The fifth and final round of The British Drift Championship took place at Knockhill Race Circuit in Scotland during the last weekend of September with the season end positions to be decided. Both AMD/Infinity drivers were aiming to improve on current championship positions with ‘Top 3’ positions to aim for.
The team’s arrival at Knockhill was greeted by wet and windy weather. The infamous “hill” would be a challenge in these conditions for even the most skilled drivers, especially considering a full grid doing their utmost to end the season on a high.
Qualifying conditions were not to be underestimated and many drivers were finding grip at a premium. The slippery track was claiming many victims from all classes but both AMD team drivers, Mark Lappage and Ian Waddington, earned ‘Top 10’ finishes thus qualifying for the Sunday eliminations and adding yet more points to the season tally.
The wet and windy weather again greeted the team on Sunday morning. After two steady drives, supported by the performance of the Infinity INF-05’s, Ian Waddington progressed to the semi-finals for the second time this season. Here he met Marcin Muchia from Poland in his Toyota Supra. Unfortunately Ian also spun out in the difficult conditions but picked himself up to go on and comprehensively beat Lee Barry in his Nissan S14 for third spot and a podium finish.
Next up was Mark Lappage in the Pro Class. After winning through to the ‘Great8’, here he just lost out to Ciaran Sinnot from Ireland in his superb Nissan S15. So two Top 8 finishes is a huge success for AMD/Infinity and builds on the momentum from previous rounds.
The 2012 British Drift Championship ended with Ian Waddington finishing 3rd in the Semi-Pro class and Mark Lappage finishing 2nd in the Pro-Class. Both classes comprised 40 competitors over the season and Acorn Motorsport Division finished a creditable 4th position in the Constructors Championship with only two cars competing against most other teams supplied with three cars.
Commenting on the Knockhill round, driver Mark Lappage – “A truly testing weekend with very difficult weather conditions. The entire team rose to the occasion and the long hours of preparation leading up to the event truly paid dividends. The INF-050 tyres performed well on a greasy track and helped us eek out the maximum performance from the cars.”
Scott Brandon, AMD Team Principle continued: “The whole team, drivers included, did a truly fantastic job in very pressing conditions. This season has been a huge rollercoaster, but to finish on such a high has made the countless hours of hard work well worth it. As always we are thankful for the support of our partners. Without Infinity, we would not be where we are today.”
