Call for industry-wide approach to tyre safety
A leading tyre industry figure has called for an industry-wide approach in the campaign to combat the use of illegal and defective tyres.
Speaking at the UK’s annual TyreSafe Awards in which Michelin won the ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award for its work in raising awareness about tyre safety issues, Phil Baldock, Michelin Communications Manager for the UK and Ireland, said: “Illegal and defective tyres can cost lives. The whole industry has to come together to drive up standards and consumer knowledge.”
Projects that helped Michelin win the award were its long-running ‘Fill Up With Air’ campaign which visited Galway, Naas and Ballymena recently and its innovative puppet shows presented to transition year students at Malahide, Portmarnock and Donabate Community Schools earlier this year.
Since its inception in 2006, TyreSafe claims that its activities and campaigns have helped reduce tyre-related casualties on UK roads by 38%.
