Pirelli extends ST truck tyre range
Pirelli has extended its ST truck tyre range for trailers and semi-trailers with the new ST:01 Base a tyre for medium and long-range journeys.
Pirelli and its associated brand Formula continue to expand their range of products for commercial vehicles, with a new tyre to sit alongside the other two existing covers for trailers and semi-trailers: ST:01 Neverending and Formula Trailer.
The ST:01 Neverending was the first tyre to score an ‘AA’ rating from the new European tyre label for rolling resistance and wet grip. It’s also Pirelli’s best in class tyre for trailers and semi-trailers when it comes to retreadability. In order to provide optimal roadholding and precise braking at the rear of the vehicle, even in wet conditions, the Formula Trailer tyre has four longitudinal grooves that zigzag along the surface of the tyre.
With the new ST:01 Base, Pirelli now extends the range to cover every need from every haulier: ranging from those who wish to contain initial investments – without compromising on premium development and quality standards – to those who put the emphasis on overall distance and retreadability, looking at the complete life of the tyre. Others prefer to prioritise running costs – focussing on low rolling resistance as well as durability. Pirelli has an answer for each eventuality.
The pricing structure for truck tyres works as follows: taking the ST:01 Base as a benchmark of 100%, the ‘premium’ ST:01 Neverending costs 110% while Formula Trailer costs 85%.
The new Pirelli ST:01 Base shares all the usual characteristics of the 01 Series: innovative profiles, structures, and materials that permit low rolling resistance, helping to save fuel and energy as well as respecting the environment. This is also thanks to reduced noise levels and materials free of highly aromatic oils (HAOF).
The compounds and structures of the ST:01 Base have been designed to optimise wear and extend tyre life while maintaining perfect reliability and safety on all types of road, including motorways and main roads. The new tyre is in fact available in two versions: R for mainly regional use and H for mainly motorway use.
The ST:01 tread pattern is subject to a Pirelli patent designed to reduce rolling resistance and decrease fuel consumption. The central grooves have a unique design that contains deformation and cuts down on rolling resistance. The land-sea ratio has been increased in order to benefit overall lifespan and durability. The tread pattern is designed to wear evenly, while the zigzag pattern ensures the efficient expulsion of stones and other objects. At the same time it makes the tyres more resistant to lateral impacts and other intrusions.
The new ST:01 Base guarantees driving comfort as well as flexibility and strength, thanks to a dual compound bead and Pirelli Hexagonal Bead Wire (HBW) technology. This consists of a unique bead wire that aids retreadability of the tyre and ensures thermal stability throughout the bead, leading to greater durability.
ST:01 Base will be available from July in 385/65 R22.5 size, and in the final quarter of 2013 it will also be sold in 385/55 R22.5 size. It scores an ‘A’ on the European Tyre Label for wet grip, ‘B’ in energy efficiency, while external noise equates to 73 decibels, in line with European Union limits.
