Stronger together: navigating change in Ireland’s tyre industry

Ireland’s tyre industry operates in a rapidly changing environment shaped by rising costs, evolving regulation, new technologies and shifting customer expectations. While these challenges are significant, they also present an opportunity to strengthen the sector through collaboration and collective representation.

Demand remains resilient, with the Irish tyre market experiencing steady growth in recent years. However, increased regulation, particularly around waste tyre management, along with rising operating costs, is placing pressure on businesses. In this environment, a strong, unified industry voice is essential to ensure regulations remain practical and workable.

Technology is also transforming the sector. With more than 196,000 electric vehicles now on Irish roads, the nature of tyre servicing is changing. Heavier vehicles, different wear patterns and enhanced safety requirements mean businesses must adapt quickly. Investment in training is critical to ensure technicians can work safely and effectively on electric and hybrid vehicles.

At the same time, recruitment and retention remain ongoing challenges. Sourcing skilled workers is becoming increasingly difficult. To support members, ITIA will shortly launch a dedicated CV portal on its website, exclusive to members.

This platform will allow businesses to access CVs from those seeking employment and advertise vacancies to a targeted audience. ITIA will actively promote the portal across its social media channels to maximise reach and engagement.

Safety remains a core priority. Tyres are the only point of contact between a vehicle and the road, and their condition directly impacts road safety. With over 10% of vehicles failing the NCT due to tyre-related issues, the industry plays a critical role in protecting road users through awareness and best practice.

Operational pressures, from compliance to cost control, also remain challenging. Access to practical supports, expert guidance and industry insight can make a meaningful difference to business resilience.

In this context, connection across the industry has never been more important. Through ITIA membership, businesses benefit from representation, tailored supports and opportunities to engage with peers across the sector.

“The challenges facing our industry are real, but so too are the opportunities if we work together,” said Sue O’Neill, CEO of ITIA. “Our focus is on delivering practical value to members and ensuring they are supported, informed and connected.”

Looking Ahead
The outlook for Ireland’s tyre industry remains positive, but success will depend on adaptability. Businesses that invest in their people, stay informed and remain connected will be best positioned to thrive.

If you want to stay ahead of industry change, access practical business supports and be part of a strong collective voice shaping the future of the sector, now is the time to join ITIA.
