Stellantis files patent for tyres made from eggshells

Multinational automotive group, Stellantis, has filed a patent for a tyre compound that incorporates discarded eggshells in order to further lower the environmental footprint of tyre production.

The patent, published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on 23rd January 2025, and submitted in 2023, outlines the company’s plan to introduce bio-waste materials into tyre production.

Stellantis claims that replacing traditional fillers like carbon black and silica with calcium oxide (CaO) derived from eggshells, would offer further environmental and performance benefits for tyres.

Eggshells, primarily composed of calcium carbonate, can be processed into calcium oxide through high-temperature treatment (at least 900°C).

If successfully implemented, Stellantis says this technology could reduce landfill waste, improve fuel efficiency, and lower rolling resistance by 20 per cent.

While the patent details the high-temperature processing of eggshells, it does not specify manufacturing costs, scalability, or potential changes in tyre aesthetics.

The technology is still in the patent stage, so commercial production timelines remain unclear – especially considering Stellantis does not manufacturer tyres.
