Mike Scanlon RIP

It was with great regret that I learned of the passing of Mike Scanlon, the retired publisher and former well-known editor of the UK tyre trade publication, Tyre Trade News.

Having bravely bore illness for a number of years, Mike passed away peacefully in his sleep last Thursday morning.

Those who had the pleasure of knowing Mike, will remember his passion for running the family publishing business (Technique Publishing Co.). Former colleagues at Tyre Trade News, David Wilson, who now publishes Retreading Business among other publications said: “Mike was a larger-than-life figure in the tyre publishing sphere and always approached his worked with a boundless energy and enthusiasm. His greatest strengths were a very clear understanding of his magazine’s position in the market, and a strong commitment to serving his customers.”

Mike had been curtailed from attending industry launches, events and trade shows for a number of years due to health issues, and he was indeed missed. He was always a great conversationalist and had his ear to the ground in relation to what was happening in the tyre industry in the UK.

Mike worked long and hard to grow the business and he treasured his weekends and going for a drive from their base in Buckinghamshire.

Mike was a popular member of the tyre trade press in Europe and always courteous, hard-working and well-informed. When he retired, the trade media, the tyre industry and his loyal readers lost a good man. Now with his passing, his family, former colleagues and friends have suffered a greater loss. May he rest in eternal peace.

I and all at the Tyre Trade Journal/ TyreTrade.ie give our sincere condolences to Mike’s wife Mary, his daughter Jane (Chenery) and loyal work colleague Lyn Barrett, as well Mikes’s extended family and network of friends.
