ITIA calls on the Department to honour commitment
Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA) calls on the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government (DoEHLG) to honour the commitment given to conduct a study on proposed legislation changes
The Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA) acknowledges the current PRI model being proposed by the DoEHLG was not agreed to and does not have the support of the tyre industry.
The National Executive Council of the ITIA decided the next steps for the ITIA are:
1. Promoting the industry solution to the management of waste tyres which is:
· An industry supported compliance scheme that tracks the movement of tyres;
· Limited number of approved waste collectors operating in an open market; and
· Development of a fund to clean up historical stockpiles of waste tyres.
2. The ITIA has hired a solicitor, Brendan Slattery of Barry Doyle & Company, who specialises in Irish Environmental Law, to provide guidance to the ITIA. Brendan Slattery is formerly from Arthur Cox Solicitors and current clients include the main regulatory bodies in Ireland.
3. The ITIA calls on the DoEHLG to honour the commitment given to conduct a ‘Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA)’. The RIA is required to be done by the Department of the Taoiseach where there are changes in legislation that will have a significant effect on the way the waste and tyre industry operates. An RIA typically examines proposed legislative changes to assess the financial impacts on businesses.
The ITIA remains committed to support a fit for purpose compliance scheme for waste tyres.
