Circol ELT funded over 4 million waste tyres in 2022

In 2022, Circol ELT funded the recovery and recycling of over four million waste passenger car tyres on behalf of its members.

Circol ELT operates the compliance scheme for end of life tyres (ELT) in Ireland, and says its approach to sustainability begins before a tyre becomes waste.

It actively promotes the benefits of proper tyre maintenance, which improves fuel consumption, increases performance and lowers carbon footprint.

Circol ELT is committed to sustainable outcomes for waste tyres. Research has shown that adding recycled tyre rubber to asphalt generates a premium road surface with improved noise reduction, drainage and wear characteristics. The net result is a reduction in CO2 emissions and improved road safety.

Waterford County Council pioneered the installation of a test road using Tyre Modified Asphalt in May 2022.

Building on this development, Circol Elt is now working with a number of stakeholders regarding the use of tyre rubber in greenways and cycleways, and plans to install a number of test surfaces in the coming year.

Circol ELT is collaborating with sports clubs on the use of rubber matting for track and training areas. It is also working with a number of tidy town organisations to showcase moulded products made from recycled tyre rubber and the reuse of tyres as planters.

Circol ELT adds that its aim is to achieve sustainable outcomes for its members’ waste tyres and ensure that all scheme tyres are processed in approved permitted facilities which are subject to routine inspection.
