English based Tyres and Accessories publication reports that Micheldever Tyres Service\u2019s latest quarterly tread\u00a0depth analysis shows that in the period from March 2012 to\u00a0March 2013 between 50\u00a0and 60 per cent of tyres taken off in depots were already below the 1.6\u00a0millimetre\u00a0legal limit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A further 40 per cent were on or just above it\u00a0and only around three per cent were above 2\u00a0millimetres. Flicking back\u00a0to when the research began in June 2008 it is clear to see that that the\u00a0situation\u00a0has deteriorated markedly over the last four or five years.\u00a0Back then only around 15 per cent of tyres\u00a0brought into depots were\u00a0already illegal. Now it is more than triple that.<\/p>\n

Last year tyre retail volumes fell between two and three per\u00a0cent, if you take a consensus of market views. This\u00a0followed several\u00a0years of decline following the outbreak of financial pandemonium that\u00a0came to the fore in\u00a02008 meaning annual tyre volumes in mature markets\u00a0such as Europe in general and the UK in particular have\u00a0been slowly\u00a0deviating from their long term development trends and as a result fewer\u00a0tyres are being sold each\u00a0year.<\/p>\n

The effect this has had on tyre retailers has been magnified by the\u00a0widely reported increase in part worn tyre\u00a0sales, an issue that is\u00a0especially influential in the UK. These tyres are generally sold by\u00a0unidentifiable and\u00a0unregulated operations, but the best estimates say\u00a0part-worn sales are hovering around record levels. The\u00a0latest government\u00a0Used Tyre Working Group (UTWG) data, for example, estimates that UK\u00a0part worn tyre 4.4\u00a0million units, approaching 15 per cent of the total\u00a0replacement market.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
