<\/p>\nThe perception may be for some, that retreaded tyres offer less in terms of quality or innovation when compared to new tyres.<\/p>\n
While in fact, retread tyres provide fleet operators with a sustainable choice that offers the safety and durability of a brand-new tyre, without compromising on quality, Continental Tyres told the Tyre Trade Journal.<\/p>\n
There are two main types of retreading carried out by technicians \u2013 hot and cold. Both processes offer different advantages to the customer, depending on the method used.<\/p>\n

The task of cold retreading involves the application of a new patterned tread onto a buffed casing. This allows for a wide selection of tread designs to be applied to the tyre.<\/p>\n
Alternatively, hot retreading aims to emulate the production of new tyres. During this process, the casing is stripped, and the carcass is retreaded from bead to bead using the same profiles and rubber mixtures found in a factory-fresh tyre. This method allows the side walls to be renewed and ensures that the tyre can be regrooved.<\/p>\n
Irrespective of the method used, the research, development, and engineering involved in delivering a new retread tyre is comprehensive. Stringent regulations within the retreading industry serve as a benchmark for manufacturers to follow. To ensure that the performance, dimensions, and tyre wall markings are comparable to those of a new tyre, manufacturers are required to conform to the UN\u2019s ECE Regulation 109.<\/p>\n
In addition, ContiLifeCycle retreading plants, manufacturing ContiRe and Bandvulc tyres, operate in line with ISO auditing criteria ensuring consistently high production standards.<\/p>\n
For a tyre to be suitable for retreading, the donor casing must be fit for reuse. To evaluate the retreadability of the tyre, technicians will use shearography, a process similar to an ultrasound, to identify any issues within the core structure of the tyre. If the tyre is deemed unsuitable for a retread, the tyre will be removed from the process and recycled.<\/p>\n
In terms of sustainability, retread tyres far exceed the sustainability potential of new rubber products. The production process of retread tyres not only requires fewer raw materials, but also uses less energy than new tyre manufacturing. For instance, retreading uses 20 per cent of the comparative resources for the manufacturing of its products.<\/p>\n
A further example of this can be seen in the steel tyre casing. Since steel manufacturing is an energy-intensive operation and contributes significantly to a tyre\u2019s environmental impact, ContiLifeCycle reuses the steel casing of used tyres. As a result, overall emissions throughout the retreading process are further reduced.<\/p>\n
And finally, the discarded rubber crumb produced when preparing a tyre for retreading is incorporated into the formula for certain new compounds. Any disused rubber is recycled and can be put forward for another useful life in applications such as playground matting and carpet underlay.<\/p>\n
Investing in retread tyres therefore not only allows operators to reduce their carbon footprint, but to realise significant savings in the total cost of ownership of their tyre management process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
