The\u00a0notorious Dakar Rally has claimed another life.\u00a0Motorcycle competitor Michal Hernik, aged 39, from Poland was\u00a0found dead on Tuesday along Stage 3 between San Juan and Chilecito, in Argentina.<\/p>\n

There are no accurate figures for total fatalities associated with the famous race but Hernik is believed to be the 28th. competitor to fall victim. The first competitor to die in the Dakar rally was back in 1979, Patrice Dodin a French ex-pat living in Africa.<\/p>\n

Resulting from incidents between competitors and spectators, there are at least 40 reported fatal accidents involving non-competitors.<\/p>\n

In a statement, race organisers say the circumstances of the death of Michal Hernik\u00a0have not yet been determined and that Hernik\u00a0did not show \u201cany external\u00a0signs of an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement continues: \u201cWhen the race management detected the loss\u00a0of his Irritrack signal and was informed\u00a0that he had not completed the\u00a0special stage at 15:16, it decided to start a search for the rider at\u00a015:23. An\u00a0ambulance helicopter found the rider 300 meters off the route\u00a0at 16:03. Unfortunately, the on-board doctor could\u00a0only confirm the\u00a0rider\u2019s death.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hernik was competing in his very first Dakar and was running 84th in\u00a0the motorcycle category. Prior to this\u00a0year\u2019s event, he had completed\u00a0the 2013 Morocco Rally and 2014 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
