Part worn tyres are some else’s waste – Tractamotors

Part worn tyres are someone else’s waste and generally do not represent good value for money, according to one of the country’s leading tyres wholesalers, Tractamotors.

“Second hand tyres are someone else’s waste. Are they fit for purpose under current Consumer legislation? At an average of 4mm tread depth, there is only 30 per cent of useful tread left, which normally translates into poor value for money,” Niall Murray, managing director of Tractamotors.

He added:  “When you further consider the age of most of these second hand tyres, and the fact that that they are invariably mismatched on a car, you end up with a potentially unsafe situation.”

“Because the supply and sale of second hand tyres is totally unregulated in Ireland, you also have the potential issues of VAT and Tax evasion for the Irish Revenue Authorities. Currently, there is nothing illegal about fitting a proper quality controlled second hand tyre. At a minimum however, the Government must legislate and more importantly enforce, minimum standards for second hand tyres to control this potentially lethal trade,” he concluded.
