Motor Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Inspection Campaign 2026

The Health & Safety Authority (HSA) is carrying out a nationwide inspection campaign in the Motor Vehicle Repair and Maintenance sector (MVRM).

Workplaces included are NCT/CVRT test centres, motor sales showrooms with associated servicing/repair activity, tyre sales and repair businesses, mobile mechanics, mobile tyre fitting and auto recovery specialists.

Motor vehicle repair workplaces present significant hazards, and these hazards must be controlled to prevent injury and ill health to employers, employees, contractors and visitors. Under Irish Health and Safety Legislation, employers, including the self-employed, must carry out a risk assessment of their place of work.

Control measures identified in the risk assessment must be put in place. A written record of that risk assessment must form part of the Safety Statement which details how health and safety is managed within the business.

The HSA BeSMART tool is a free online resource designed to help small businesses and the self-employed easily prepare their mandatory workplace risk assessments and safety statements. Templates for the sector including Motor Vehicle Repair/Garages/Car Servicing/Tyre Centre/Tyre Sales can be found at www.besmart.ie.

Specific guidance for the sector is available on www.hsa.ie including:

These information sheets can help those working in the sector by identifying the common hazards and providing guidance on how to control the hazards to protect themselves and their workers from them.
