Yokohama using AI for tyre air-pressure checks

Yokohama Rubber has begun practical tests on an innovative technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to gauge tyre air pressure based on the sound produced by tapping a tyre.

The company says this breakthrough aims to address long-standing challenges in the logistics sector, improving safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

The system replaces the traditional reliance on driver experience and manual pressure gauges, which are prone to inaccuracies and potential air leaks. The new AI technology promises to enhance daily operations and minimise tyre-related downtime.

An AI algorithm identifies sound patterns from a tyre tap, differentiating it from environmental noise and estimating air pressure with precision.

Using a dedicated smartphone app, drivers can visually monitor a tyre’s air pressure without specialised tools or expertise.

According to Yokohama Rubber, the system eliminates the need for expensive real-time monitoring devices and reduces the risk of valve failure caused by manual checks.
