“For now we believe that motorists should be advised that they are not necessarily the value for money option they are presented as. Motorists should be asked to consider how much they are paying for what can often be just a couple of millimetres of tread before they are close to the legal minimum of 1.6mm. You can probably get more millimetres for your euros with a new tyre,” the spokeman added.
“As far as safety is concerned a motorist could get lucky and get a good tyre; the problem is the uncertainty over what kind of life the tyre has had and its overall integrity. In our opinion tyres are not an area for motorists to take a chance as they are fundamental to vehicle control and safe motoring.”
