Safety and environment key factors in truck tyre design

In the future, tyre developers will not just have to consider low rolling resistance, high mileage, durability, retreadability and new pressure monitoring systems, but also enhanced safety and environmental factors.

That’s the opinion of Continental Tyre executives who told a press briefing in London recently that,  in view of rising oil prices and the increasing focus on environmental concerns, improving rolling resistance will be crucial.

Based on conservative estimates, internal calculations at Continental  prove that, if the rolling resistance of all tyres sold by the company in Europe for regional and long-distance transport was improved by five per cent, around 318,000 tonnes less of CO2 would be emitted each year and fine particulate pollution reduced.
