Gardaí in Dublin have stopped a motorist travelling at speed on a bald space saver tyre.
The car was apprehended by members of An Garda Síochána in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday) on the Finglas Road. When stopped, Gardaí detected the excessively worn space saver tyre.
The vehicle, which was also uninsured, was seized by Gardaí. Court proceedings are now underway for the driver.
Space saver tyres are much thinner than a standard car tyre, and are not intended for extended use. They are designed to get you home or to your nearest garage following a puncture, and usually cannot be used at speeds of more than 80 km/h.
It is clear that this motorist was travelling on this tyre for some time due its horrendous condition. Thankfully Gardaí stopped the driver before their reckless and lazy behaviour cost someone their life.
If you are convicted of the offence of driving with dangerous tyres, you could be fined up to €2,500, or receive a 3-month prison sentence, or both.
You will also have five penalty points on your licence on conviction.
