Pirelli wins Evo tyre test 2012

The Pirelli P Zero has won Evo magazine’s annual tyre test, after going up against all of its key rivals in a series of challenges.

The P Zero tyre was put through its paces on a circuit in the south of France where wet handling, dry handling, braking and aquaplaning were assessed, followed by a drive on a mixed road route designed to replicate real world conditions.

Evo is one of the motor industry’s most respected magazines, published in 12 different languages, and focussing on high performance cars. The test compared tyres from Pirelli, Continental, Dunlop, Goodyear, Hankook, Kumho, Michelin, Nexen and Vredestein, all fitted to a standard Audi A3 1.8 TFSI producing 168 horsepower. The P Zero tyre tested was in 225/45 R17 94Y XL size, under average ambient temperatures of 26 degrees centigrade, which placed an even bigger demand on the tyres.

The Pirelli P Zero proved quickest around the circuit in the wet handling test and also scored top marks in the dry handling test. The P Zero won the road route test as well, scoring 100%.

Evo declared the P Zero a comfortable overall winner, saying: “There’s no doubt about our winner. The Pirelli P Zero puts together a consistent and convincing set of objective test results and subjective scores to take the overall win by a good margin.”

The magazine also described the P Zero as “the only tyre to bring sparkle to the test car’s steering,” and concluded: “In a crowded, very competitive segment of the market, the Pirelli is clearly the best.”

All of Pirelli’s road car tyres benefit from the know-how and experience gained in Formula One, where the Italian firm is official supplier.
