Pirelli and Bosch to develop intelligent tyre technology
Pirelli and Bosch have signed a joint development agreement with the aim of creating new software solutions and driving functions combined with sensors integrated into tyres.
This collaboration combines Bosch’s expertise in the field of hardware and software with MEMS sensors and Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre technologies, which include algorithms, modelling and intelligent sensors in tyres.
For drivers, this will translate into higher levels of comfort, safety and sustainability, as well as improved driving dynamics. Bosch and Pirelli share the long-term goal of working to explore advanced tyre signal processing logic as a potential input for improved vehicle dynamic control systems.
Pirelli Cyber Tyre is the world’s first tyre-based system with integrated sensors that collect information and transmit it to the vehicle for processing in real time. Bosch has already developed an ESP application specifically tailored to Pirelli tyres, which is an initial project carried out in collaboration with car manufacturer Pagani Automobili.
The Pirelli Cyber Tyre technology in the Pagani Utopia Roadster transmits key tyre information to the ESP control unit, which, by operating it, makes it possible to optimise the individual properties and performance of the tyres, offering greater safety and personalised driving conditions.
As a global technology and services provider, Bosch says it will bring its extensive hardware and software expertise to the joint development program. The German firm is a leader in MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) sensor technology and develops and produces tyre pressure sensors using the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) standard.
By merging this expertise with Pirelli’s in-tyre devices technologies – both hardware and software, algorithms, and tyre modelling, it will be possible to collect, process, and transmit real-time tyre data to provide parameters for the vehicle’s electronic control system, using BLE with very low power consumption.
Pirelli and Bosch are currently working on leveraging Bosch’s MEMS technology for tyre applications.
