Is your workshop EV ready? Why training matters now more than ever
Despite a recent dip in overall vehicle registrations, electric vehicles (EVs) in Ireland are charging ahead. According to SIMI, EV sales rose by 36 per cent in February, with 2,524 units registered. Notably, private consumers accounted for two-thirds of these sales — a clear sign that EV adoption is accelerating.
As more drivers transition to electric, they will naturally turn to their trusted local garages for servicing and repairs. That’s why it’s vital for tyre fitters and technicians to stay ahead of the curve. EVs bring new technology, new safety challenges, and new expectations from customers. And that’s where proper training comes in.
Why EV safety training is crucial
Unlike traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, EVs have unique mechanical, electrical, and structural features that technicians must understand.
Most critically, EVs operate on high-voltage systems (often over 400V). These can pose serious safety risks if managed incorrectly — even during something as routine as a tyre change.
Components are often tightly integrated with the vehicle’s structure, and damaging a lithium-ion battery can trigger a thermal runaway, leading to fire or even explosion.
On top of that, special tools and procedures are required, including non-conductive tools and insulated gloves when working near high-voltage components. Safe lifting techniques are also essential, as incorrect jacking can damage the underfloor battery pack.
Correct tyre fitting matters too
EVs are heavier, deliver instant torque, and rely on low rolling resistance to maximise range. As such, fitting the wrong type of tyre can result in:
- Reduced battery efficiency and driving range
- Increased road noise
- Faster tread wear
- Compromised braking and acceleration safety
Technicians must be confident in selecting the right tyres — those with appropriate load and speed ratings, energy-efficient compounds, and noise-reduction technology.
Are you EV ready? Here’s what to check
Electrical Awareness
- Recognise high-voltage components (typically orange cables)
- Wear insulated gloves and use non-conductive tools
- Understand EV-specific risks and emergency fire protocols
Correct Lifting Techniques
- Use manufacturer-recommended jacking points
- Avoid battery pack areas (commonly under the floor)
- Consider EV-approved lifting equipment
Tyre Selection
- Choose tyres with correct load/speed ratings
- Prioritise low rolling resistance and quiet performance
Fitting and Removal
- Follow correct torque settings
- Handle regenerative braking systems with care
- Watch for torque-related tread wear patterns
Post-Service Checks
- Set tyre pressure and TPMS correctly
- Conduct road tests if applicable
- Remove all tools and double-check for electrical safety
EV Training for Tyre Technicians
The Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA) is urging all members to ensure their technicians are EV Ready by undergoing proper training. This helps businesses:
- Meet legal obligations for staff safety
- Deliver a higher standard of service
- Instill confidence in EV-owning customers
While a basic EV introduction is included in ITIA’s Tyre Technician Training Programme, the association also offers a more advanced option for those who want to take the next step.
The ITIA’s one-day, Level 1 Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Awareness Qualification (run jointly with NTDA UK is for Technicians who regularly replace tyres on EV vehicles, including Tyre Repairs, and who have been trained and assessed as fully competent based on the syllabus below and in accordance with the requirements of occupational standards.
The content of the Level 1 Electric / Hybrid Vehicle Awareness qualification has been designed to give the learners the knowledge to work safely around electric/hybrid vehicles.
It contains one mandatory unit covering:
- The types of electric/hybrid vehicles available.
- Hazards associated with motor vehicle high energy electrical systems.
- Working safely around electric/hybrid vehicles including charging.
As a result, the learner successfully completing this qualification will acquire significant core knowledge of working safely around, but not mechanically maintaining, electric/hybrid vehicles.
Additionally mandatory unit covering:
- Tyre Construction
- Tyre Specific Information on EV Tyres
- Tyre Repair Standard BSAU159g
- Vehicle Jacking – Best Practice
- Safe Working Practices for Fleet Checking Vehicles
