The Pirelli-backed GT Cup championship will welcome an Audi R8 LMS to the next round of the eight-round series that is due to take place at Oulton Park on Saturday (21 July).
The Audi R8 LMS recorded 64 race victories by February 2011, and has won seven championships across Europe (2009-2010) plus class victories in the legendary Spa and Nurburgring 24 Hour races.
Wiltshire-based driver Nigel Mustill will be racing the Wessex Vehicle Services-sponsored Audi R8 LMS. A former United Autosports Team car, this spectacular vehicle has previously competed in the British GT and European GT Championships.
Mustill was due to race his Aquilla CR1 in the GT Cup season opener at Donington Park, sharing driving duties with regular team-mate Bob Berridge. However, engine problems after Berridge took the overall win in the opening race forced an early retirement for the Aquilla and Mustill was unable to compete over the rest of the weekend.
“I will be driving solo for the rest of the season as I need to get used to the Audi,” said Mustill. “The GT Cup Championship is a great place to race and everyone in the paddock is really friendly. Not getting to drive the Aquilla at Donington Park was disappointing, so I am really looking forward to getting out in the Audi and having some fun at Oulton Park.”
The eight-round GT Cup Championship has welcomed a series of changes for 2012 with the introduction of GT3 homologated cars onto the grid for the very first time. Saturday’s action will consist of one qualifying session followed by two sprint races, and Pirelli will be once again on hand to supply slick tyres in DM and DH compounds, plus the WS and WH wet weather tyres.
