Gardaí issued tyre tread depth gauges for Tyre Safety Day
An Garda Síochána has this week issued “thousands” of tyre tread depth gauges to its members, which it says will be used to check tyres at checkpoints across the country during tomorrow’s Tyre Safety Day.
The Garda press office told TyreTrade.ie that these particular tread depth gauges are only being issued to Gardaí at this time.
However, they tell us that a new booklet is being published by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) as a guide to the public on tyre safety, which includes a pop-out gauge for checking tyre tread.
By law, it’s every driver’s responsibility to ensure that their vehicle’s tyres are safe and that all are a minimum 1.6mm in depth.
If you drive with damaged or worn tyres you risk prosecution and could be fined up to €5,000, receive a three-month prison sentence or both. You’ll also get five penalty points on conviction.
