EPA gives waste battery advice

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is advising battery distributors of there obligations, under the battery regulations.

The EPA says defines a “distributor”as any person who provides batteries on a professional basis to an end-user.

To ensure compliance as a distributor of batteries you are required to do the following:

Waste industrial or automotive batteries should only be passed to:
A permitted collector acting on behalf of a compliance scheme or a self-complying producer, or

A person or company authorised to collect the waste batteries. Any distributor transferring waste automotive batteries to such a person or company will be required to report all collections of these waste batteries to the EPA each year. It is an offence to transfer waste to any other person unless they are appropriately authorised. If you are in any doubt ask to see a copy of their waste collection permit which should list waste batteries.

Non-compliance may lead to legal action up to and including prosecution.
