Continental warns on the false economy of fitting part worn tyres

Continental Tyres Ireland is warning motorists on the false economy of fitting part worn tyres.

“Some motorists see the option of second hand or part worn tyres as a way of saving money and that is why we are seeing an increase in the number of outlets across the country selling these tyres,”  Paddy Murphy, General Manager of Continental Tyres Ireland said.

“However, we would say that second hand tyres are a false economy and what’s more important, they are a threat to the road safety of all road users. I have spoken to tyre dealers who have had cars come into their workshops on second hand tyres and in several cases, they have encountered tyres that were not roadworthy, for example, tyres that had uneven tread wear or worse still, had sidewall repairs that only became apparent when the tyre was off the rim. Repairs should never be made to the sidewall because the whole structure of the tyre has been weakened. We would call on the RSA and the government to look at regulating this sector and to advise motorists of the danger of fitting second hand tyres.”
