Bridgestone to build pyrolysis pilot plant for end-of-life tyre recycling

Bridgestone has announced plans to construct a pilot demonstration plant for precise pyrolysis of end-of-life tyres at its plant in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

The plant will start operating in 2027 with an aim of recycling old tyres into new tyres, a form of what is known as “horizontal recycling”.

The facility will use technology that can produce tyre-derived oil and recovered carbon black – key components in manufacturing new tyres.

The new pilot plant will scale up these technologies, refining continuous operational processes and quality control to support future mass production.

Bridgestone says it will also focus on talent development in chemical recycling to strengthen expertise in this emerging sector.
