Better PPK savings with Continental
Posted in Continental By John Loughran On August 28, 2012Family-run steel haulage company Randall Barber Transport is saving an average of eight pence per kilometre (PPK) per tyre with Continental, with each tyre travelling up to 10,000km further compared with the fleet’s previous brand of tyres.
The company is also enjoying the benefits of top notch technical advice from the manufacturer’s leading Technical Services team.
Having originally selected Continental as preferred tyre supplier in 2009, director Steve Barber has no intention of turning back, stating cost efficiency, reliability and an excellent blend of technical and customer service among the principal benefits.
“I was keen to find a more cost effective tyre solution when the price of tyres rocketed just over three years ago,” explains Barber. “Continental tyres proved to be both competitively priced and achieve a greater mileage for less, hence our decision to run Continentals across our fleet for the long term.”
Randall Barber uses a 50/50 combination of new and retreaded tyres for its fleet of 12 trailers and eight tractor units. The company also sends used tyres to Continental for retreading. With the majority of its journeys consisting of regional motorway trips with heavily laden vehicles, running high quality, reliable tyres is of paramount importance. Continental’s advanced engineering has done the company proud, with no vehicle downtime recorded for tyre-related issues.
“The wear rates on the Continentals are impressively even,” continues Barber. “We haven’t found any excessive shoulder wear or uneven wear patterns on the steer tyres. This has made a big difference in terms of running efficiency, and certainly compares favourably with previous suppliers. On the one occasion that we required technical help, our Continental technical advisor sorted the problem within a week. I thought this was great service“
Altrincham-based Randall Barber Transport was founded in 1976 by Randall Barber, who decided to establish his own haulage company after gaining valuable years of experience in the transport industry. Having initially transported loads across Europe, the company opted to focus on UK haulage in the 1980s, when it was approached by a local steel firm to transport steel sheet and coils.
Randall Barber steadily expanded its fleet over the next decade, investing in new vehicles and a new headquarters in Cheshire. Its founder has now partially retired from the company, leaving Steve Barber as the company’s Transport Manager and Director, who works alongside his relatives to deliver a first rate, personal service to loyal customers throughout the country.
