Liam Carroll Transport Group ceases trading

Liam Carroll Transport has ceased trading, blaming the failure of the business on the economic downturn and bad debts.

Owner of the company, Liam Carroll said he was deeply saddened by his company’s closure and job losses.

However, it has been reported locally that the majority of the 119 employees (up to 75) might be hired by another company, MasterLink, which would be taking on some of the Liam Carroll Transport contracts.

The Liam Carroll Group was one of the largest providers of transport, warehousing and distribution services in Ireland.

In existence since 1978 with depots at Thurles and Hillsborough, Co. Antrim, the group offered a comprehensive range of specially designed services to suit transport, warehousing and distribution requirements throughout Ireland at both national and European levels.

All workers had been informed of their entitlement to statutory redundancy and had been given advice to assist them. When that process had been concluded the other Company, MasterLink was introduced.

Michael Lowry TD said that MasterLink would be leasing the Carroll properties and site would be employing 75 people, making a nett loss of 39 jobs. “The new company will be able to develop and expand as soon as it stabilises the financial position of the operation,” he said.

Lowry stated that hopefully, in time, MasterLink would be able to offer an opportunity to the people who had lost their jobs to be re-employed.

He stressed that MasterLink were not taking over the Liam Carroll Company and that it and its liabilities remained the responsibility of Liam Carroll Transport.

It is believed that MasterLink will service and maintain existing contracts. One of those is a Coca Cola contract.

Well known in the tyre industry, Liam Carroll Transport recently gave up its tyre distribution and warehousing activities prior to ceasing trading this month.
